Last May 13-14, 2006 , the 19th National Open Karatedo Championship was held at the University of Mindanao at Tagum City, Davao del Norte. This Philippine Karate Federation sponsored activity was one of the biggest events of the year since slots for the RP Team for the Doha Asian Games on December are at stake. The country’s top karatekas were there not to assist, but to participate in the said event. Only the Gold medalists of the 23rd Southeast Asian Games (Nelson Pacalso, Marna Pabillore, and KDA’s Gretchen Malalad) were exempted from the Nationals and were automatically enlisted to compete in the 2006 Asian Games.

KDA participants included black belters Roehl Parungao, Cherli Tugday, John Coronel, and Alma Cabasal. Although just a few, KDA still proved to be strong and competitive. Cherli Tugday won Gold in Women’s -60 kg Kumite after beating John Falgatan. Aside from that, Tugday bagged the silver and bronze medals in the Women’s Individual Kata and Women’s Open Weight Kumite events, respectively. In the Men’s +75 kg Kumite event, John Coronel garnered a silver medal after his last bout against RP team member Michael Dumayag of SKI.

There were more than 30 clubs who participated in this two-day meet including KDA, SKI, ASK (Cebu and Tacloban), Philippine Navy, Philippine Army,Philippine National Poilce, JKA (Lipa, Cebu, and NCR) , SSK, DKD, and many more.

The opening ceremony lasted for almost 3 hours, which was probably one of the longest ceremonies ever.

Tagum City gave a warm welcome to the three gold medalists last SEAG. Aside from giving a special appearance, former Pinoy Big Brother Celebrity housemate Gretchen Malalad , was also there to give full support to KDA and to her RP teammates.

Overall, the event was a success. Winners of the tournament were highly qualified and earned their well-deserved slots. Almost all of the RP Team members who competed in the tourney qualified to participate in this year’s Doha Asian Games.
