The Heart of an Athlete

September 22, 2006

Joy Ruiz with Gretchen Malalad at the back, watching
carefully the karate moves of a fellow karateka.

This is Joy Ruiz, a Sidekick… a Karateka, too.
Training also in KDA.
I found this very inspiring message from her Friendster Account.

Love the game.
Love the game for the pure joy of accomplishment.
Love the game for everything it can teach you about yourself.
Love the game for the feeling of belonging to a group endeavoring to do its best.
Love the game for being involved in a team whose members can’t wait to see you do your best.
Love the game for the challenge of working harder than you ever have at something and then harder than that.
Love the game because it takes all team members to give it life.
Love the game because at its best, the game tradition will include your contributions.
Love the game because you belong to a long line of fine athletes who have loved it.
It is now your legacy.
Love the game so much that you will pass on your love of the game to another athlete who has seen your dedication,
your work, your challenges, your triumphs…
and then that athlete, because of you, will love the game

Karate

15th Asian Games Doha 2006

Karate, literally meaning “way of the empty hand” in Japanese, is a martial art that emphasises striking techniques such as punching, kicking, knee and elbow strikes using open hand techniques. It originated as a method of self-defence which relied on the effective use of the unarmed body, and was made up of elaborate techniques of blocking or thwarting an attack and counter-attacking.

As a physical art, karate is almost without equal. This highly dynamic sport provides excellent all-round exercise and develops co-ordination and agility, making balanced use of a large number of body muscles. (more…)

Big gathering of stars at PSA annual awards

July 4, 2006

Big gathering of stars
at PSA annual awards
Posted: 10:48 PM (Manila Time) | Dec. 18, 2003
Inquirer News Service

THE PHILIPPINE Sportswriters Association will stage what is expected to be the biggest gathering of sports stars in recent years when it holds the 2003 PSA Annual Awards Night on Jan. 9 at the Manila Pavilion.

Malacañang has already acknowledged receipt of the copy of invitation sent by PSA president Robert D. Cuevas subject to confirmation of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, who is expected to grace the occasion this year to personally present the awards and cash incentives to the athletes.

Two years ago, the Chief Executive graced the PSA rites, presenting the top award shared by Fil-American golfer Dorothy Delasin and billiards king Efren “Bata” Reyes.

Manny Pacquiao, the “people’s consensus” world featherweight champ and reigning International Boxing Federation superbantam titlist, and CJ Suarez, the fourth Filipino to win the Bowling World Cup, head the awardees as co-winners of the Athlete of the Year plum.

Also high on the list of awardees are the women’s trios of Liza del Rosario, Liza Clutario and Cecilia Yap, who made history by becoming the first Asians to win a gold in the World Tenpin bowling championship, and the Bacolod girls’ softball squad which topped the Junior League World Series 13-14 division.

Sports officials said the President, who failed to grace last year’s edition, is very likely to accept the invitation considering her support to the campaign of Pacquiao and the other athletes and the backing of First Gentleman Mike Arroyo to sports through the First Gentleman Foundation.

Other achievers, including the gold medalists in the last Southeast Asian Games in Vietnam, will be feted during the Awards Night sponsored by Red Bull and Agfa Color and supported by San Miguel Corp., Philippine Olympic Committee, Philippine Sports Commission, Samsung, Philippine Basketball Association and Manila Mayor Lito Atienza.

19th National Open Karatedo Championship

   19th National Open Karatedo Championship
   03 May 2006
   by Alma Cabasal
   Taken from the KDA Website

Last May 13-14, 2006 , the 19th National Open Karatedo Championship was held at the University of Mindanao at Tagum City, Davao del Norte. This Philippine Karate Federation sponsored activity was one of the biggest events of the year since slots for the RP Team for the Doha Asian Games on December are at stake. The country’s top karatekas were there not to assist, but to participate in the said event. Only the Gold medalists of the 23rd Southeast Asian Games (Nelson Pacalso, Marna Pabillore, and KDA’s Gretchen Malalad) were exempted from the Nationals and were automatically enlisted to compete in the 2006 Asian Games.

KDA participants included black belters Roehl Parungao, Cherli Tugday, John Coronel, and Alma Cabasal. Although just a few, KDA still proved to be strong and competitive. Cherli Tugday won Gold in Women’s -60 kg Kumite after beating John Falgatan. Aside from that, Tugday bagged the silver and bronze medals in the Women’s Individual Kata and Women’s Open Weight Kumite events, respectively. In the Men’s +75 kg Kumite event, John Coronel garnered a silver medal after his last bout against RP team member Michael Dumayag of SKI.

There were more than 30 clubs who participated in this two-day meet including KDA, SKI, ASK (Cebu and Tacloban), Philippine Navy, Philippine Army,Philippine National Poilce, JKA (Lipa, Cebu, and NCR) , SSK, DKD, and many more.

The opening ceremony lasted for almost 3 hours, which was probably one of the longest ceremonies ever.

Tagum City gave a warm welcome to the three gold medalists last SEAG. Aside from giving a special appearance, former Pinoy Big Brother Celebrity housemate Gretchen Malalad , was also there to give full support to KDA and to her RP teammates.

Overall, the event was a success. Winners of the tournament were highly qualified and earned their well-deserved slots. Almost all of the RP Team members who competed in the tourney qualified to participate in this year’s Doha Asian Games.
