Paul Alvarez ‘attacks’ lady reporter after arrest
08/21/2007 | 11:20 AM
Only a few minutes after undergoing a police interrogation on charges of mauling a taxi driver, former basketball star Paul Alvarez attacked a female television reporter as she was trying to interview the alleged victim.
Alvarez now faces a different "three-on-one situation" from his high-flying, slam-dunking hard court days.
Aside from charges of physical injury from a taxi driver, Alvarez faces charges from Mandaluyong police for resisting arrest and from ABS-CBN reporter Gretchen Malalad for allegedly injuring her.
Malalad, a contestant of the Binibining Pilipinas beauty pageant in 2002, was setting up an interview with driver Wilfredo Cabanlit at the police precinct when Alvarez suddenly attacked her, radio station dzBB reported Tuesday.
With Southeast Asian Games gold medals in karate to her name, Malalad blocked Alvarez's punches even as the former cager grabbed the reporter's hair. Some reports said Alvarez also threw an elbow to Malalad's face.
The radio report added that Alvarez even threatened to beat up the cameraman of the television station.
He eventually locked himself up in the police station's comfort room to avoid reporters.
The report said that Malalad, a self-confessed fan of the former player, was disappointed with the player's actions and added that she will be filing charges of serious physical injuries.
Alvarez was apprehended by the police after mauling a taxi driver whom he accused of jacking up his fare while on their way to Pasig City.
The driver sustained wounds to the forehead after Alvarez smashed a beer bottle in his face.
As of this posting, the former basketball player is still detained at the Mandaluyong police headquarters. - GMANews.TV

Besides, Malalad and the ABS-CBN crew already left Alvarez to his own cognizance. They were after the driver this time. But Alvarez kept on inserting himself into the situation attempting to prevent the crew from interviewing the driver.
First off, Alvarez had no right to prevent the crew from interviewing the driver.
Second, Alvarez had no right to prevent people from going in and out of the police station since he's not a police officer.
Third, the driver did not say he did not want to be interviewed so the ABS-CBN crew had the option to interview him.
Fourth, the fact that the police allowed the ABS-CBN crew inside the station meant that it was the right time for them to conduct the interview. If the police didn't want the interview to take place, they wouldn't allow the press to enter the station and would have told the press they would present the people involved in due time.

A cameraman should always keep his camera running. However, there's a thing called a final cut where parts of the video are cut out because:
1. It isn't needed.
2. It is in order to follow the request of the suspect/victim/newsmaker/whomever.
Just because a camera is on doesn't mean it will be shown.
In fact if you look at the footage once more, after Alvarez requested to not be interviewed, the camera angle went down to the ground/floor because they respected his decision not to be interviewed.
However, when Gretchen Malalad wanted to interview the victim (aka Taxi Driver), Alvarez entered the scene. By doing so, he made himself part of the camera's line of sight.
Its no longer the fault of ABS-CBN's camera crew if Alvarez went into the scene and attempted to block the interview of the taxi driver. Remember, its not Alvarez who was the target of the interview anymore, it is the driver.
So Alvarez was acting like a boor preventing an interview to another person. Alvarez actually is violating the right of the victim to be interviewed.
