Dapat turuan ng leksyon

SHOWBIZ MISMO! Ni Cristy Fermin
Thursday, August 23, 2007

* * *

08/21/2007 | 04:45 PM

(Updated 6:08 p.m.) Nearly 12 hours after going down a drunken warpath, former basketball star Paul Alvarez on Tuesday afternoon left his Mandaluyong police prison cell after posting a P4,500-bail.

Radio station dzBB reported that Judge Lizabeth Torres of the Metropolitan trial court-Branch 60 approved the bail petition on charges of physical injuries.

Alvarez was charged with two counts of libel and slapped a P2,000 fee for each. He was fined an additional P500 bond fee.

Alvarez underwent police interrogation on charges of mauling a taxi driver. He was also accused of attacking ABS-CBN reporter Gretchen Malalad as she was trying to interview the driver.

He was earlier reported to be facing charges of resisting arrest.

Malalad, a contestant of the Binibining Pilipinas beauty pageant in 2002, was setting up an interview with driver Wilfredo Cabanlit at the police precinct when Alvarez suddenly attacked her, radio station dzBB reported Tuesday.

With Southeast Asian Games gold medals in karate to her name, Malalad blocked Alvarez's punches even as the former cager grabbed the reporter's hair. Some reports said Alvarez also threw an elbow to Malalad's face.

The radio report added that Alvarez even threatened to beat up the cameraman of the television station.

He eventually locked himself up in the police station's comfort room to avoid reporters.

The report said that Malalad, a self-confessed fan of the former player, was disappointed with the player's actions and added that she will be filing charges of serious physical injuries.

Alvarez was apprehended by the police after mauling a taxi driver whom he accused of jacking up his fare while on their way to Pasig City.

Wednesday, August 22, 2007

AN ERSTWHILE professional basketball player was arrested Tuesday dawn after he allegedly mauled a taxi driver whom he had earlier accused of trying to jack up his fare by going through circuitous routes.

Additional charges will be filed against the former Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) player Paul "Bong" Alvarez after he attacked Gretchen Malalad, a lady reporter of ABS-CBN Channel 2, who was interviewing the complainant inside the Mandaluyong City police headquarters.

Malalad was interviewing taxi driver William Cabanlit whom Alvarez reportedly mauled when Alvarez suddenly attacked her. Malalad, who is a karate expert, was able to parry Alvarez's blows and was able to hit Alvarez in the face before the police could separate them but she suffered scratches on her neck.

A policeman present during the incident said Alvarez hit Malalad's face with his elbow.

Reports said Alvarez also threatened to beat a cameraman of the television station who was able to capture the incident on video.

"He is so rude. We respected his decision not to be interviewed but when we were about to interview the complainant he was trying to stop us and when he went out of the room he elbowed me on the face," Malalad said. A contestant in the Binibining Pilipinas pageant in 2002, Malalad represented the country in numerous international karate competitions, including the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games where she won a gold medal.

Alvarez was locked up in the police station's comfort room to avoid the hordes of reporters who gathered at the scene.

Malalad said she will file charges of physical injury against Alvarez while Cabanlit is also set to file similar charges before the prosecutor's office.

Alvarez was apprehended by the police after beating Cabanlit whom he had earlier hailed at the Rembrandt Hotel in Quezon City to take him to Pasig City.

Cabanlit said Alvarez changed his mind and instead asked that he be brought to Quiapo via Shaw Boulevard in Mandaluyong City.

He added that he decided to take Boni Avenue to avoid traffic but failed to inform Alvarez who had dozed off. When he woke up, Alvarez reprimanded the driver for not following his instructions triggering a heated argument.

Cabanlit said he told Alvarez not to worry as he was going to deduct the additional fare but Alvarez started beating him and hit his face with a beer bottle.

He goes out of the cab and ran for help while patrolling village watchmen pacified Alvarez and brought him to the police station.

Alvarez is still detained at the Mandaluyong City police station.

Early this year, Alvarez figured in a brawl with model Borgy Manotoc at the Embassy Bar at the Fort in Taguig City after Manotoc's girlfriend, Ornusa Cadness, complained that Alvarez mistook her for a waitress. Alvarez later apologized for the incident.

Alvarez gained fame in the late 80s and early 90s when he played for San Miguel, Ginebra Alaska at the PBA. He is married to actress Almira Muhlach. (AH/Sunnex)

Other Bong steals the scene

August 22, 2007

Former professional basketball player Paul Alvarez was slapped with multiple criminal charges and jailed yesterday for mauling a taxi driver and battering a female reporter in Mandaluyong City.

Senior Supt. Ericson Velasquez, identified the complainants of Alvarez as Wilfredo Cabanlit, 46, cab driver, of Tindog Street, Area B-Talanay, Batasan Hills, Quezon City, and Gretchen Malalad, of ABS-CBN.

Velasquez says “Bong,” then PBA’s “Mr. Excitement” and now a bit player in television shows, faces two counts of physical injuries and resisting arrest after creating a raucus at the Mandaluyong police station.

He said when a soused Alvarez saw the network crew, he warned the cameraman not to take footage. Malalad was trying to get his side on the complaint of Cabanlit.

Malalad told police that upon Alvarez’s entrance at the police investigation office he hit her face with his elbows and pulled her hair.

Standing her ground, Malalad, who was a taekwondo blackbelter and gold medalist in the recent Southeast Asian Games gave Alvarez a dose of his medicine.

“Siyempre lumaban ako. Tinamaan ko siya ng dalawang beses sa mukha, pero tinamaan din niya ako [Certainly, I fought back. I hit him twice in the face as I was also hit].”

Velasquez said duty policemen pacified Alvarez and Malalad.

Mandaluyong City prosecutor Elenita Dimagiba recommended a P6,000 bail for Alvarez for his temporary liberty.

Records showed Alvarez flagged down Cabanlit’s Reno cab (WTS-721) at Rembrandt Hotel in Quezon City around 5 a.m. yesterday with the instruction to head for Pasig City.

After several minutes of travel, Alvarez changed his mind and instead asked to be taken to Quiapo, Manila, via Shaw Boulevard before dozing off.

Cabanlit said he took Boni Avenue instead to avoid the traffic but failed to inform Alvarez.

He told police that when Alvarez came around, he flared up and started hurling invectives at him.

The driver said he was explaining his side only to get kicked in the face and rained blows with Alvarez with a bottle.

To escape further punishment, Cabanlit told the police he rushed out of the vehicle but Alvarez gave chase.

But the retired cage star was prevailed upon by village officials and brought to the police station where Malalad, who is enlisted with the Air Force, happened to be around.

Alvarez, of 20 George St., Washington Avenue in Pasig, refused to be interviewed and Malalad claimed she and her crew respected his decision.

Alvarez was locked up with detainees even as his bail was being worked out by friends and relatives. Gigi Muñoz David

MANILA,, Philippines – (UPDATE) Former basketball player Paul "Bong" Alvarez is facing charges of physical injuries and resisting arrest after he allegedly beat up a taxi driver and hit a television reporter early Tuesday morning.

Mandaluyong City police identified Alvarez's victims as Wilfredo Cabanlit, a Reno taxi driver, and Gretchen Malalad of ABS-CBN.

Police Officer 3 Virgilio Sinlao said Cabanlit sustained bruises in the head and chest after Alvarez, who argued with the driver over the taxi route, allegedly beat him up at around 5:00 a.m.

Reports said the apparently intoxicated Alvarez was brought by barangay (village) officials to the police station for roughing up Cabanlit whom Alvarez accused of overcharging when the driver took a longer route — passing through Boni Avenue in Mandaluyong City — to his residence in Quiapo, Manila.

Alvarez had hailed the taxi near Hotel Rembrandt in Quezon City and initially asked Cabanlit to take him to Pasig City but later changed his mind, the report added.

At the police station, Alvarez punched Malalad in the head while she was observing the investigation.

Alvarez is set to post bail this afternoon before the city prosecutor's office.
