Bong Alvarez scuffles with cabbie, reporter

Former professional basketball player Paul “Bong” Alvarez was thrown behind bars yesterday for beating up a taxi driver and getting into fisticuffs and hair-pulling with a female reporter who covered the incident.
Alvarez, known as “Mr. Excitement” at the height of his career in the Philippine Basketball Association, was charged with two counts of physical injuries and resisting arrest before the Mandaluyong City prosecutor’s office.
Prosecutor Elenita Dimagiba recommended P6,000 bail for Alvarez, who was released yesterday afternoon after posting bail.
Mandaluyong City police chief Senior Superintendent Ericson Velasquez said Alvarez, now a bit player on various telenovelas, was brought to the local police station due to the complaint filed by taxi driver Wilfredo Cabanlit, 46.
While at the police station, he struck ABS-CBN reporter Gretchen Malalad in the face, triggering a physical confrontation.
Velasquez said Alvarez flagged down Cabanlit’s Reno taxi at the Rembrandt Hotel in Quezon City at 5 a.m. yesterday and instructed the driver to take him to Pasig City.
Alvarez later changed his mind and asked that he be taken to Quiapo, Manila via Shaw Boulevard, then dozed off. Cabanlit said he took Boni Avenue instead to avoid traffic, but failed to inform Alvarez, who was already sound asleep.
When Alvarez woke up, he realized that Cabanlit failed to follow his instructions. He reprimanded the driver.
Cabanlit said he was explaining his side when Alvarez suddenly kicked his face, then held his head while repeatedly hitting him with his other hand. Alvarez also grabbed a bottle and struck him in the face, according to Cabanlit.
To escape further punishment, Cabanlit rushed out of the vehicle but Alvarez gave chase. However, responding barangay officials prevented the former PBA player from further hitting Cabanlit.
At the police station, Malalad’s attention was attracted by the commotion involving Alvarez and Cabanlit. She and her crew tried to cover the incident.
“He was really rude. As soon as he saw us, he shouted at us and threatened to destroy our camera,” she said after the incident.
Alvarez, a resident of Pasig City, refused to be interviewed and Malalad claimed she and her crew respected his decision.
However, when Malalad approached Cabanlit and tried to interview him, Alvarez blocked their path and prevented them from getting near the taxi driver.
Malalad said Alvarez elbowed her in the face when he left the room.
“Of course I fought back. I hit him twice in the face, but he also hit me,” said Malalad, a three-time Southeast Asian Games (SEAGames) gold medalist in taekwondo.
In the video footage aired by ABS-CBN, Alvarez was also seen pulling Malalad’s hair. Velasquez said duty policemen pacified Alvarez and Malalad.
At the prosecutor’s office, Alvarez apologized for hitting Malalad, but claimed that he became angry when Cabanlit tried to dupe him.
Alvarez was a prominent figure in the San Sebastian Stag’s backcourt in the NCAA before he joined the PBA in 1989 along with several big names that include Benjie Paras and Nelson Asaytono, among others.
A certified journeyman, Alvarez moved from his former team Alaska and joined Sta. Lucia, Shell, Ginebra and San Miguel before playing in the Metropolitan Basketball Association (MBA).
Alvarez is not without his share of trouble in and out of the playing court as he was shot once in a sauna in Quiapo. In the MBA, he was also involved in some physical altercations with other players, a far cry from the high-flying maneuvers he once displayed in the PBA, where he holds the record of 71 points scored in a single game.
It was touch and go for a while for Alvarez until he left for the United States to join ex-PBA player Vince Hizon to play with the Pennsylvannia Valleydawgs in the US Basketball League.
After a forgettable stint in the US, Alvarez went back to the PBA, playing for FedEx and then Mobiline.
Prior to this incident, Alvarez had an altercation with model Borgy Manotoc – who allegedly beat up another man earlier this year – at a bar in Makati.

- Fidel Jimenez, GMANews.TV

Gretchen: In Defense
Gretchen Malalad in a live video interview shown in Boy and Kris last August 21, 2007 @ 10:30am after the incident between Bong Alvarez and Gretchen Malalad shown earlier in Umagang Kay Ganda.
So what he did was … tiningnan niya lang ako tapos ang ginawa niya siniko niya akong bigla, then of course, I reacted.
Boy: Gretchen, sa mga pagkakataon bang ganito… kayo bang mga field reporters handa ba or are you able to prepare for something like this?
Kasi…
Boy: Tinatanong ni Kris, Gretchen.
Kris: Nagpacheck-up ka?
Gretchen: Yes, Ma'm. Tiningnan po. At nagpamedical check-up po ako.
Kris: Dapat lang, kasi Boy dapat depensahan ang sarili and all.
Anong mangyayari?
Gretchen: Yes, Ma'm. Itutuloy ko po ung kaso.
Kris: Ano ung kaso mo?
Gretchen: Physical injuries ho.
Kris: Ohh…
Boy: Okay. Maraming Salamat Gretchen.
Kasi it's hard
Bakit mananapak ng babae?
Number 2.
Boy: Yes.
Kris: Magalang siyang humingi ng interview.
Boy: In other words, nakuha natin ang isang panig.

There’s an attack sa yo, then you react.
Gretchen Reporting 08.21.2007
Despite the earlier issue Gretchen Malalad faced over Bong Alvarez, she continued to deliver her news report for TV Patrol World. This video was taken on the same day that it happened.
Comatose na bata muntik ipalibing nang buhay
I was cooking dinner when I saw this in TV Patrol. It caught my attention. Firstly because the reporter was Gretchen Malalad (my in-law's neighbor, a black belter)who was assaulted by Bong Alvarez as well as the cab driver. However this report happened before Gretch was assaulted.
Here's the report:
————————————————————————————-the statement that made me literally cry is this
simply because I can relate, maybe because I'm a mom and also my baby (Paoie) experienced to had a ventilator when his lungs were not yet fully developed.
I'm planning to call the company who provided ventilator for my son and ask for their rates, then raise funds if necessary.
Jerome is confined at Gat Andres Bonifacio Memorial Medical Center, I googled and found out that this is in Delpan, Tondo. I have no idea where is this place nor how to go there but I will try my best to find out.

Bong Alvarez gets two solid blows from Gretchen Malalad this morning
I saw this report on TV while dressing up for work this morning and it really made my day. A drunk Bong Alvarez (a 6 footer something former Phil. Basketball Association star) figured in a fistfight with Gretchen Malalad. (erstwhile Pinoy Big Brother figure, taekwondo medalist, 2005 Taekwondo SEA Games Gold Medalist, a member of the Armed fores of the Philippines and a Beauty Queen, now news reporter for ABS-CBN)
An apparently drunk Bong Alvarez woke up in the middle of his cab-ride, confused as to where he is. Shaw Blvd. was heavy with traffic and the cab driver decided to take another route and decided not to wake up Alvarez. Bong Alvarez, reportedly got mad and kicked the driver in the head, the cab driver ran for his life and called the cops.
Bong Alvarez was brought to the police station where he refused to be interviewed by Media. Gretchen Malalad, former star of the Pinoy Big Brother celebrity edition, a taekwondo black belter and 2005 Southeast Asian Games gold medalist, was the ABS-CBN beat reporter who rushed to the police station. Upon Bong's enraged wish not to be interviewed, Malalad did not bother to talk to him but tried to go inside the police station to interview the cab driver instead. When she passed Alvarez, he took a cheap shot at her and elbowed her right smack in the face (left jaw I think) and hit her in the temple, Gretchen who is a taekwondo blackbelter and a former member of the AFP, instinctively and immediately struck back with two solid punches to his face, driving the living daylights out of him. BWahahahaha. Helpless and surprised still drunk Alvarez reportedly responds with . . . get this, scratches and by pulling her hair. BWahahahaha. A girly fighter it appears bwahahhahaha from a man of his huge frame what an embarrassment indeed bwahahahahaha.
Alvarez reportedly figured in several similar incidents/fights the past couple of years. he even got shot in the back from some scuffle. . .

Ex-cager mauls ABS-CBN reporter, taxi driver
Metro (as of 10:19 AM)
A former professional basketball player is facing criminal charges for mauling an ABS-CBN reporter and a taxi driver in Mandaluyong City Tuesday morning.
Reporter Gretchen Malalad said Paul "Bong" Alvarez pulled her hair, elbowed her in the face and neck and punched her on the forehead while she was interviewing taxi driver William Cabanlit whom Alvarez reportedly mauled. Malalad added that she also suffered scratches on her neck.
Malalad, a black belter, said she was able to hit Alvarez in the face before police could separate them. The incident was captured by ABS-CBN cameraman Larry Galinato.
Hindi ko talaga akalain (Bong Alvarez is so rude. When he declined to be interviewed, we respected his decision. But when we were about to interview his victim he was trying to stop us. When he went out of the room, he elbowed me in the face. I was caught off guard),” she said.
Alvarez was brought to the police station for mauling Cabanlit.
A radio DZMM report said an intoxicated Alvarez hailed a taxicab at Rembrandt Hotel in Quezon City around 5 a.m. Cabanlit said the former basketball star first wanted to be taken to Pasig City then changed his mind and asked that he be brought to Quiapo via Shaw Boulevard.
Cabanlit said he decided to take Boni Avenue to avoid heavy traffic but failed to inform Alvarez who had dozed off. He said Alvarez later woke up and reprimanded him for not following his instructions.
Cabanlit said he asked Alvarez to get off the taxi after receiving a tongue-lashing from the ex-cager. He said Alvarez kicked him and hit him in the face with a bottle.
Alvarez is now detained at the Mandaluyong police station. Malalad and Cabanlit filed separate complaints against him.

Paul Alvarez ‘attacks’ lady reporter after arrest
Paul Alvarez 'attacks' lady reporter after arrest
08/21/2007 | 11:20 AM
Only a few minutes after undergoing a police interrogation on charges of mauling a taxi driver, former basketball star Paul Alvarez attacked a female television reporter as she was trying to interview the alleged victim.
Alvarez now faces a different "three-on-one situation" from his high-flying, slam-dunking hard court days.
Aside from charges of physical injury from a taxi driver, Alvarez faces charges from Mandaluyong police for resisting arrest and from ABS-CBN reporter Gretchen Malalad for allegedly injuring her.
Malalad, a contestant of the Binibining Pilipinas beauty pageant in 2002, was setting up an interview with driver Wilfredo Cabanlit at the police precinct when Alvarez suddenly attacked her, radio station dzBB reported Tuesday.
With Southeast Asian Games gold medals in karate to her name, Malalad blocked Alvarez's punches even as the former cager grabbed the reporter's hair. Some reports said Alvarez also threw an elbow to Malalad's face.
The radio report added that Alvarez even threatened to beat up the cameraman of the television station.
He eventually locked himself up in the police station's comfort room to avoid reporters. The report said that Malalad, a self-confessed fan of the former player, was disappointed with the player's actions and added that she will be filing charges of serious physical injuries.
Alvarez was apprehended by the police after mauling a taxi driver whom he accused of jacking up his fare while on their way to Pasig City.
The driver sustained wounds to the forehead after Alvarez smashed a beer bottle in his face.
As of this posting, the former basketball player is still detained at the Mandaluyong police headquarters. - GMANews.TV

MANILA,, Philippines – (UPDATE) Former basketball player Paul "Bong" Alvarez is facing charges of physical injuries and resisting arrest after he allegedly beat up a taxi driver and hit a television reporter early Tuesday morning.
Mandaluyong City police identified Alvarez's victims as Wilfredo Cabanlit, a Reno taxi driver, and Gretchen Malalad of ABS-CBN.
Police Officer 3 Virgilio Sinlao said Cabanlit sustained bruises in the head and chest after Alvarez, who argued with the driver over the taxi route, allegedly beat him up at around 5:00 a.m.
Reports said the apparently intoxicated Alvarez was brought by barangay (village) officials to the police station for roughing up Cabanlit whom Alvarez accused of overcharging when the driver took a longer route — passing through Boni Avenue in Mandaluyong City — to his residence in Quiapo, Manila.
Alvarez had hailed the taxi near Hotel Rembrandt in Quezon City and initially asked Cabanlit to take him to Pasig City but later changed his mind, the report added.
At the police station, Alvarez punched Malalad in the head while she was observing the investigation.
Alvarez is set to post bail this afternoon before the city prosecutor's office.
