Nagandahan siya and since they were looking for a title to replace Magandang Umaga, Pilipinas (MUP), she consulted Luchi Cruz Valdez, head ng ABS-CBN news and current affairs production, and Charie Villa, head ng ABS-CBN news gathering, about it and both were impressed with the title as well.
Its segments will be handled by Bernadette Sembrano, Ogie Diaz, Winnie Cordero, Rica Peralejo and Alex Santos.
Five reporters — Atom Araullo, Doland Castro, Jay Ruiz, Sol Aragones and Gretchen Malalad (yes, of the Pinoy Big Brother Celebrity Edition) — will patrol the streets para mag-report ng iba’t ibang krimeng nangyayari sa ating paligid.

Welcome a brand new morning as ABS-CBN's Umagang Kay Ganda dishes up its latest offering for every Kapamilya starting this Monday, June 25.
The new morning show will be hosted by Edu Manzano, Pinky Webb, Donita Rose, Kim Atienza, Alex Santos, and Anthony Taberna.
Different segments will be hosted by Bernadette Sembrano, Ogie Diaz, and Winnie Cordero, Rica Peralejo, and Atom Araullo.
In the June 21 press conference of Umagang Kay Ganda at Plaza Ibarra in Timgo, the new hosts emphasized that their new show has three simple goals: to inform, entertain and inspire.
According to Maria Ressa, ABS-CBN Head of News and Current Affairs, the idea for the new show came to her after she listened to Imago's version of the song "Umagang Kay Ganda." She said that this song embodied the spirit of the new morning program. She was particularly struck by the line that goes: "Basta tayo magkasama, laging mayroong umagang kay ganda." In fact, if they could put a subtitle to their new morning show, it would be "Haharapin Natin."
REFORMATTING. Maria Ressa explains that they had to undergo this reformatting in order to keep up with the changing demands of their viewers. With the rapid rise of infotainment, they are hoping to find the "right mix that taps the credibility of news and the inspiration of entertainment."
The main ingredient they have added to this early morning show is audience interaction and participation. In line with this new format, they will be airing their show from Club O (formerly Dish) in ABS-CBN compound to make the hosts more accessible to the public.
"We want to bring in the audience of entertainment to news but it will always be news," assures the veteran journalist.
Live audience are made to truly feel the Kapamilya spirit as the tandem of Edu and Pinky grant their wish in "Kapamilyang Pinoy" while Anthony helps a deserving viewer find employment in "Aasenso Ka."
Mornings will never be complete without viewers' favorite weather and information source Kuya Kim delivering his daily weather forecast and new knowledge to live by in his segments "Pana-panahon," "Red Alert," and "Where in the World is Kuya Kim?"
Crime never sleeps, and out to patrol the streets are five reporters: Atom, Doland Castro, Jay Ruiz, Sol Aragones, and former Pinoy Big Brother Celebrity Edition housemate Gretchen Malalad.
Bernadette will not only give updates on our country's new breed of heroes in "Balitang OFW," she will also feature job openings abroad as well as inform viewers on the latest government policy regarding deployment.
And as a special treat to mothers, Winnie "The Palengke Queen" will dish out practical advice on how to improve your homes and lifestyles within a budget, as well as monitor the prices of basic commodities that can affect a family's finances.
Some more changes to look forward to include: more traffic LIVE points and more regional news. They will be setting up at least 6 traffic LIVE points at the following areas: NLEX, SLEX, España, Katipunan, Quiapo, and Commonwealth. They will also be adding several more regional stations in addition to the 19 being currently tapped.
Umagang Kay Ganda is one of the latest TV offerings of ABS-CBN, the station that produced such morning shows such as Alas Singko Y Media and Magandang Umaga Pilipinas.
Umagang Kay Ganda will start airing Monday, June 25, from 5:15 a.m. to 8:30 a.m.

Beauty queens turned newscasters
They look good and they sound good, and they add a touch of glamour and glitter to the field of newscasting.
Funfare’s “beauty experts” Felix Manuel, Joey Cezeare, Gery Yumping and Francis Calubaquib are referring to beauty queens who have crossed over to television, not to soaps or sitcoms but to newscasting.
The “beauty experts” have the list, led by 2006 Miss Philippines-Air Ginger Abadiano Conejero (”imported” from California) who is an entertainment correspondent for TV Patrol World and several shows on ANC. The others are:
• Cathy Veloso-Santillan, 1979 Bb. Pilipinas second runner-up and undoubtedly the prettiest face to ever grace primetime news, anchored RPN 9’s Newswatch.
• Joyce Ann Burton, 1981 Bb. Pilipinas-Young International and 1985 Bb. Pilipinas-Universe (the only one to have won both titles in the history of the Bb. Pilipinas Pageant), anchors the news on the ANC Channel.
• Lia Andanar, 1989 Bb. Pilipinas-International and Miss Friendship in that same year’s Miss International pageant, is also an ANC news anchor.
• Cheryl Cosim, 1989 Limgas na Dayat first runner-up in Lingayen, Pangasinan, started as a weather girl for ABS-CBN and then hosted her own public affairs program.
• Cara Subijano, 1991 Supermodel-Philippines and 1994 Bb. Pilipinas-World, became a courtside reporter for the UAAP games and ventured into newscasting. She works for the ABS-CBN’s The Filipino Channel (TFC) in San Francisco, California.
• Alou Camua, one of Manila’s Five Loveliest in the early ’90s, anchored a news program for ABS-CBN.
• Cher Calvin, 1994 Miss New York-USA first runner-up and a Broadcast Journalism graduate from New York University, works with Emmett Miller at the anchor desk for the KTLA Morning News: First/Early Edition. She came from Las Vegas’ Fox affiliate KVVU where she co-anchored the station’s Fox5 News This Morning. From 1998 to 2003, she was news anchor and features reporter at GMA 7; and then as anchor, host and reporter for ABS-CBN where she received two Golden Dove Awards, the Philippines’ Emmy Awards equivalent. She is a recipient of the prestigious Emmy Award and the Golden Mike trophy from the Radio & Television News Association for the KTLA News special Access Asia. Cher had her first job in the news business in New York where she simultaneously worked as news desk assistant editor at Time magazine and assignment desk assistant at CNN. Also in New York, she served as editor-in-chief of A-PlusList.com.
• Phoemela Baranda, 1995 Elite Model-Philippines second runner-up, currently anchors TV Patrol World’s entertainment segment. She has also hosted several variety/entertainment/reality-TV shows and is one of the country’s most sought-after commercial and ramp models.
• Rhea Santos, 1996 Bodyshots finalist, is an AB Masscom magna cum laude graduate from St. Paul’s College in Quezon City. She has hosted GMA 7’s Unang Hirit and received the 2002 Star Awards Best Morning Show Host. She currently anchors QTV 11’s primetime news.
• Patricia Bermudez, 1996 Bb. Pilipinas semi-finalist and 1999 Mutya ng Pilipinas semi-finalist, anchored the news when she was just starting and was assigned as a courtside reporter for the PBA. Married to cager Vince Hizon, Patricia now hosts Venta5 on ABC 5.
• Tisha Silang, dethroned Bb. Pilipinas-Universe in 1998 (replaced by her first runner-up, Jewel Lobaton, wife of senatoriable Koko Pimentel), hosted Mornings@GMA.
• Miriam Quiambao, 1999 Bb. Pilipinas-Universe and first runner-up in that same year’s Miss Universe Pageant, hosted Unang Hirit and now hosts Palaban (with Winnie Monsod and Malou Mangahas) also on GMA 7. • Gretchen Malalad, 2003 Bb. Pilipinas Miss Talent and Miss Red Bull Supreme Energy recipient, was a Philippine Air Force Airwoman second class during her stint on Pinoy Big Brother (PBB) Celebrity Edition and now serves as a correspondent for TV Patrol World’s police beat.
• Margaux Mitz Flores, 2004 Bb. Pilipinas semi-finalist, worked for ANC as a news anchor and later as a stock market analyst.

Pres. Arroyo appeals for unity versus poverty |
|
President Arroyo on Tuesday reiterated her call for unity amid political discord, vowing to put the interests of the people ahead of politics by relentlessly focusing on the poverty alleviation and other economic programs, as the country celebrated its 109th Independence Day. Speaking at the Independence Day celebration at the Quirino Grandstand in Manila, the President reminded her audience that just as the national heroes gave up their lives to achieve Philippine independence it is the “duty of every Filipino to unite and work hard to ensure that our countrymen will have a better life.” The President said political reforms and economic gains were the key to “freeing the country from the bondage of poverty and alleviating the plight of the poor.” In Tagalog she said, “If our heroes fought to achieve independence, it is only right that we continue their noble purpose to free the nation from poverty.” She said her administration will continue its “pro-growth, pro-trade and pro-investment” strategies to achieve progress, citing her economic achievements that enabled the country to save enough funds to be used for infrastructure projects and pay increase of government employees. The organizers gave the Independence Day celebrations the theme “Sama-Sama Tayo Tungo sa Pag-Asenso [We’re All Together Toward Progress],” which started with flag-raising and wreath-laying ceremonies at 7 a.m. Tuesday in front of the monument of National Hero Jose Rizal at the Luneta Park. ABS-CBN Correspondent Gretchen Malalad reported that Tourism Secretary Joseph Durano, Ludovico Badoy, executive director of the National Historical Institute, Philippine National Police Chief Oscar Calderon and other Cabinet members were present during the ceremony. After the ceremony, Mrs. Arroyo visited the jobs fair of the Department of Labor and Employment before proceeding to the Quirino Grandstand to deliver her speech and to watch the annual Independence Day parade. Elsewhere in the country, the Filipinos also commemorated the 109th anniversary of the declaration of the Philippine independence. In Kawit, Cavite, Vice-President Noli de Castro led the celebration at the Emilio Aguinaldo Shrine. Aguinaldo, the first President of the Republic of the Philippines, proclaimed Philippine independence from Spain in his home on June 12, 1898. De Castro’s speech included an attack against candidates who refuse to admit defeat. They “are only protecting their own interests.” “A better nation that Filipinos can be proud of is one that has a working democracy and a vibrant economy that leads to social development,” he said. De Castro said that to simply celebrate Independence Day by gathering in one place to commemorate the country’s freedom is not enough. “Mabubuhay lang ang kalayaan kung bawat araw ay handa nating ipaglaban ang ating mga karapatan at protektahan ang hangarin nating magkaroon ng kaunlaran at katahimikan [Freedom will only thrive if every day we are ready to fight for our rights and protect our objective to live in prosperity and peace],” he said. Vin D’honneur In her speech before the foreign diplomatic corps during the Vin D’ Honneur in Malacañang, the President took note of the political stability of the country that the Filipinos displayed by exercising their right to vote last month. She renewed her commitment to see to it that the Philippine economy remains strong and continues to grow. She vowed to keep her government on the path she has set in which the people’s interests are put ahead of political considerations by focusing her administration’s work relentlessly on relentlessly on the economy. Papal Nuncio Archbishop Fernando Feloni, the Dean of the diplomatic corps, congratulated the President and said Filipinos of various sectors could benefit from her concept of unity and cooperation to better improve the nation. Feloni said that with the cooperation between the executive, the legislative, judicial and the administrative system “Filipino people can secure for themselves precious benefits.” He also encouraged the government to learn from its history, the cultural heritage and social institutions. “Your past will teach you and your present will lead you towards the better governance of the nation,” Feloni said in his speech. He stressed that “the government being the highest institution of the land together with the Senate makes the voice of the people known to enact laws and to respond to the needs of the country.” Feloni challenged Mrs. Arroyo to make true to her ambitious plan of alleviating poverty, building a stronger economy and strengthening the rule of law.
