NINETEEN Filipinos who bagged a medal or two in the 2002 Busan Asian Games are seeing action again in this year’s Asiad.
Except for four-time World Cup tenpin champion Paeng Nepomuceno, however, the rest of the gold medalists in the South Korea Games are missing from the RP lineup.
Equestrienne Mikee Cojuangco-Jaworski, winner of the individual show jumping competition, the victorious 9-ball billiards pair of Francisco “Django” Bustamante and Antonio Lining, and RJ Bautista, who partnered Nepomuceno to the men’s doubles gold, did not make it to the Games either on account of recent poor form, semi-retirement or unavailability due to a previous commitment.
Bustamante, for one, begged off due to a commitment to play in an International Pool Tour event. He was left to woe a missed opportunity when the IPT scratched the year-ending tournament.
But the other big stars among the Busan medalists are in the fold, including CJ Suarez and Chester King (silver in bowling’s men’s trios); Liza del Rosario, Irene Benitez, Liza Clutario, Jojo Cañare and Cecilia Yap (silver in ladies’ five-player team); Rexel Nganhayna (silver, wushu’s men’s sanshou); Danielle Cojuangco (silver, equestrian’s team show jumping); Gretchen Malalad (bronze, karate’s women’s kumite); Alvin Amposta (bronze, rowing’s men’s lightweight double sculls); Jethro Dionisio (men’s individual trap); Dionisio, Eric Ang and Jaime Recio (bronze, men’s trap team); Tshomlee Go (bronze, taekwondo’s men’s flyweight); Veronica Domingo (bronze, taekwondo’s women’s welterweight); and Edouard Folayang (bronze, wushu’s men’s sanshou).

Due on Dec. 5 are the 11-member golf team, wrestling (9), bodybuilding (4), archery (11), fencing (16) and cycling track (9), while entries from aquatics-diving (7), canoe-kayak (4), squash (3) and wushu (12) are scheduled to arrive Dec. 7.
The karate squad will arrive Dec. 9 here.
“This might be one of the most underestimated teams (to the Asiad). They lack in funding and training compared to the 2005 SEA Games preparations. But with what I’ve seen from the athletes, their dedication and perseverance, they might be able to deliver better results,” Ramirez said.
This means, Ramirez continued, the possibility that they will surpass our target of five golds may become a reality.
“They might deliver tremendous results by honouring the country with more golds,” the RP chef de mission said, citing, among others, the performances of karatedo, shooting, equestrian, fencing, baseball, swimming, bowling, sailing and boxing.
