Encore for 19 Busan medalists

By Teddyvic S. Melendres

NINETEEN Filipinos who bagged a medal or two in the 2002 Busan Asian Games are seeing action again in this year’s Asiad.

Except for four-time World Cup tenpin champion Paeng Nepomuceno, however, the rest of the gold medalists in the South Korea Games are missing from the RP lineup.

Equestrienne Mikee Cojuangco-Jaworski, winner of the individual show jumping competition, the victorious 9-ball billiards pair of Francisco “Django” Bustamante and Antonio Lining, and RJ Bautista, who partnered Nepomuceno to the men’s doubles gold, did not make it to the Games either on account of recent poor form, semi-retirement or unavailability due to a previous commitment.

Bustamante, for one, begged off due to a commitment to play in an International Pool Tour event. He was left to woe a missed opportunity when the IPT scratched the year-ending tournament.

But the other big stars among the Busan medalists are in the fold, including CJ Suarez and Chester King (silver in bowling’s men’s trios); Liza del Rosario, Irene Benitez, Liza Clutario, Jojo Cañare and Cecilia Yap (silver in ladies’ five-player team); Rexel Nganhayna (silver, wushu’s men’s sanshou); Danielle Cojuangco (silver, equestrian’s team show jumping); Gretchen Malalad (bronze, karate’s women’s kumite); Alvin Amposta (bronze, rowing’s men’s lightweight double sculls); Jethro Dionisio (men’s individual trap); Dionisio, Eric Ang and Jaime Recio (bronze, men’s trap team); Tshomlee Go (bronze, taekwondo’s men’s flyweight); Veronica Domingo (bronze, taekwondo’s women’s welterweight); and Edouard Folayang (bronze, wushu’s men’s sanshou).

Team RP Confident

Due on Dec. 5 are the 11-member golf team, wrestling (9), bodybuilding (4), archery (11), fencing (16) and cycling track (9), while entries from aquatics-diving (7), canoe-kayak (4), squash (3) and wushu (12) are scheduled to arrive Dec. 7.

The karate squad will arrive Dec. 9 here.

“This might be one of the most underestimated teams (to the Asiad). They lack in funding and training compared to the 2005 SEA Games preparations. But with what I’ve seen from the athletes, their dedication and perseverance, they might be able to deliver better results,” Ramirez said.

This means, Ramirez continued, the possibility that they will surpass our target of five golds may become a reality.

“They might deliver tremendous results by honouring the country with more golds,” the RP chef de mission said, citing, among others, the performances of karatedo, shooting, equestrian, fencing,  baseball, swimming, bowling, sailing and boxing.

Gretchen in TV Patrol for Korean Gold

Wednesday, November 29th, 2006

After winning gold last November 2006 in Busan, Korea, Ms. Gretchen Malalad was interviewed by Ms. Niña Corpuz in TV Patrol.

Here is the transcript of that interview.

training. Pero hindi ito naging balakid sa kanya.

Gretchen M.:   Ganon talaga e, part ng pagiging atleta injury.. injuries..  So okay naman..

Once you’re dreaming something, kung gusto mo makukuha mo yan e,

basta ano lang talaga hardwork lang.

Pressure rising
Thursday, 16 November, 2006

Pressure. It is what separates the great from the good, the victors from the vanquished and the champions from the chasing pack. Nowhere is it more apparent than in the cauldron of a major sporting event.

To some, pressure is an inspirational force which can push them to the very limits of excellence. To others, it is a suppressing burden which saps their ability to perform.

Months and years of commitment will have gone into the lives of thousands of people preparing for 15th Asian Games. Most will feel that they have done everything possible to be in prime mental and physical condition to succeed.

Important? Undoubtedly. But that can all fall by the wayside if they fail to deal with the inevitable pressure that a huge occasion like Doha 2006 can bring. Everyone will have to handle it at some stage and will do so in different ways, be they Olympic champions, coaches, younger developing athletes, even team officials.

Malalad snatches gold in South Korea

Thursday, November 16th, 2006

Wednesday, November 15, 2006
SEA Games grand slam gold medalist and reality TV star Gretchen Malalad copped the gold medal in the 2nd Korea Open Championship last weekend in Busan, South Korea.

The 26-year-old Malalad, a former Binibining Pilipinas titlist, won a 6-0 decision over a Korean rival in the finals to rule the +65 kg kumite.

Mentored by long-time RP Karate Team coach David Lay, Malalad, the country’s lone entry in the tournament, also bested a Vietnamese foe in a 6-2 decision in the semifinal round.

“Her victory sowed that she’s very much ready for the Asian Games,” said Ponce, who told Sun.Star Cebu earlier that the RP Karate Team is eyeing one gold medal in the fast-approaching Doha, Qatar Asian Games.

Malalad, who was supported by the Philippine Sports Commission and Accel, is eyeing to surpass her bronze medal finish in the Busan Asiad four years ago where she played with a shoulder injury on her way to the semifinal round.

Aside from the Pinoy Big Brother celebrity, other members of the Karate team who will be vying for medals in the Asian Games are SEA Games gold medalists Maj. Nelson Pacalso and Ma. Marna Pabillore, European Open gold medalist Bern Chu, Bong Toribio, Junel Perenia, Mae Soriano and kata specialist Noel Espinosa.

Except for Malalad and Espinosa, the rest of the RP karatekas are in Naples, Italy for their three-month international training and exposure with Italian coach Giuseppe Romano.

The Italy-based RP Team will be competing for two European meets in the Italy Open Karate Championships on Nov. 25-26 and the San Marino Open Karate Championships on Dec. 1-3.

Before leaving for Doha on Dec. 8, the RP Team will test their mettle against powerhouse teams from Iran, Hungary, Netherlands, and reigning world karate champion Italy. (JAF)
