Like the rest of the contestants na ’di taga-Metro Manila, pinamasahihan ito ng ABS- CBN para makarating dito. They are all housed sa isang magandang tirahan.

Located close to the Pinoy Big Brother (PBB) house, it has all the amenities na makikita sa regular school. May classroom, may gym at may canteen called Kuya’s Cafeteria.

Ang line-up ng trabaho is a dream come true for the students na nagnanais pumasok sa showbiz.

Consider: Moy Ortiz, singer, songwriter, arranger and member of the vocal group The Company, assigned to teach student various singing techniques. Who wouldn’t want to be taught magsayaw ng ace choreographer na si Maribeth Bichara? Well, the PDA students will have no less than Maribeth as dance teacher.

A much-admired dancer herself, Maribeth belongs to an affluent family in Bicol, who used to frown on her choice of profession. But now, they are extremely proud of her accomplishments.

Maribeth is the younger sister of Al Bichara, former Albay governor and currently Philippine ambassador sa Lebanon.

Will Maribeth join politics in time? Kasi, sabi nga, if she does, she can just dance all her way to any political position she wants.

Who is not familiar with Gretchen Malalad, naging SEA Games medalist sa karate and a former PBB celebrity housemate?

Tantiya niya, five months on the family way na si Aleck, courtesy of businessman cum actor, Carlo Maceda.

Gretchen resigns from air force to join showbiz

FREEHAND
By: Mario Bautista
People’s Journal

PBB’S karate champ Gretchen Malalad has resigned from the Air Force to try her luck in showbiz. “I was officially discharged after three years of working with them,” she says.

She’s now one of the four regular teachers in “Pinoy Dream Academy”. She will be teaching physical fitness to the 16 PDA scholars. Jim Paredes has come from Sydney, Australia where he now lives to be the academy’s headmaster or principal. Moy Ortiz of the Company will be teaching music and voice lessons while Maribeth Bichara will teach them the various forms of dance. There will be extra teachers to handle other subjects like acting, public relations, etc.

“We chose Gretchen to teach fitness as she really teaches martial arts in the gym and taebo to the soldiers in Villamor Air Base,” says PDA director Lauren Dyogi.

“But I’ve suited the curriculum I prepared to the needs of the PDA students,” she adds. “More on cardio exercises para they have greater stamina for singing and dancing.”

Ex-PBB housemate teaches in Pinoy Academy

DREAM FACTORY
Ethel Ramos

“Nagkataong may isinauli akong mga PBB tapes sa PBB
house. Direk Dyogi happened to be there. And he told me
he was looking for a sports teacher for the students of the
PDA.” – Gretchen Malalad

——————————————————————————–

THE new show on ABS-CBN, “Pinoy Dream Academy” (PDA) is destined to become the biggest reality-cum-talent search on TV ever. Already, it has created a stir when it presented the participants from the National Capital Region (NCR) last August 12. Last Saturday, August 18, would be-scholars (yes, that’s how the contestants are called) from both the different regions and abroad, were introduced.

From the group, 16 students will be trained to become the next singing sensation. But aside from honing their talent for singing, they will also undergo a series of performance and character enhancement sessions.

“Like a typical student, each of the scholar will attend school. The academy is like all schools. It will have a classroom, a gym and even a cafeteria, which is named Kuya’s Cafeteria,” said director Lauren Dyogi, over-all in charge of this program.

“Ang magiging iba lang sa kanila, lahat ng activities na gagawin nila sa kanilang klase– the hardships they’ll undergo and the triumphs they will win for themselves – will be seen by the public,” he added.

Meet the three members of the faculty of PDA: Moy Ortiz, Gretchen Malalad and Maribeth Bichara.

Gretchen Malalad

27 May 2006
by Juby Bernadette Ruiz

After being encouraged by her family upon seeing the advertisement of ABS-CBN that they were looking for a female martial artist, 3-Time Sea Games Gold medalist Gretchen Malalad had no idea that she was to do an audition for the Pinoy Big Brother Celebrity Edition.

Becoming a part of the Pinoy Big Brother Celebrity Edition made her very excited. She felt no anxiety upon the notion that she will be joining well-known celebrities.

Much of her time is dedicated to the country. The proof of the matter is her winning 3 consecutive gold medals from the Sea Games. During the recent 2005 Sea Games held in the country, with over thousands of fans in Mandaue City Sports Complex, Malalad added another gold medal to her legend as she defeated Nguyen Thi Nga of Vietnam in the +60kg Kumite division. The pressure of playing in her own country made her bout difficult. Nga left 3 bruises on Malalad’s chin. However, she was able to grab the victory with the help of the people’s cheers.

Also known as the former Binibining Pilipinas candidate, she would always say “A gold medal is better than winning a beauty title”.

Mahilig sa coffee si Gege

Manny’s brod, Malalad join coffee bandwagon

An article in Manila Times written last February, 2006
Read the full article
here..

To get a boost before they work out, Bobby Pacquiao and Gretchen Malalad don’t pop pills or shoot up on dope. A cup of coffee will do just fine.Pacquiao, the boxer better known as Manny’s kid brother, and karate champion Malalad are part of the recent wave of athletes who profess the benefits of coffee not just as a recreational drink but as a vital source of antioxidants.

Recent research from Norway published in the Journal of Nutrition shows that coffee contains more antioxidants than fruit or tea.Antioxidants have been shown to help increase the body’s resistance level against what is collectively known as oxi-dative stress.Oxidative stress is said to be one of the major causes of ageing, cardiovascular diseases, cancer, cataracts, age-related declines in the immune system, and degenerative diseases of the nervous system—causes for concern for both athletes and regular persons alike. That’s among the reasons why Pac-quiao, the World Boxing Council Continental Americas super featherweight champion, says he can’t last a day without taking coffee.“I like taking hot coffee because it warms me up,” says the prizefighter dubbed “The Sniper” by boxing aficionados.Pacquiao says he usually takes his first cup of coffee after jogging in the morning.  “I also take it after lunch, merienda and even before dinner,” he says, adding that as long as he takes coffee before 7 p.m., he can still sleep soundly. When he’s preparing for a fight, Pacquiao’s hours at the gym naturally doubles and becomes more intense—something that will happen in the months to come as he prepares for a rematch with Carlos Alberto Hernandez, whom he beat last September via split decision. For more information on the health benefits of coffee, log on to www.positivelycoffee.org.

Meanwhile, Malalad—the Southeast Asian Games gold medalist, beauty queen, model and actress—says she drinks as many as four cups a day.

“I start my day with coffee and I even take coffee before training,” says the former Binibining Pilipinas finalist. Like Pacquiao, the University of Santo Tomas graduate, who also has a daily radio program on DWIZ, takes her physical fitness seriously.

“I work out everyday and I make sure that I eat healthy food,” she says. “That, of course, includes taking coffee.”

Gretchen Malalad: Pretty & Deadly

May 18, 2006

A 2004 Article for your reading pleasure…
Written b
y Romina S. Austria

Candidate No. 22 in 2003 Bb. Pilipinas Beauty Pageant

Tall and tan and young and pretty. And deadly.

Gretchen Malalad, gold medalist in the +60 kg kumite event of the 22nd Southeast Asian Games in Hanoi, Vietnam, in December, is currently the toast of Philippine sports.

It is easy to deduce why: The 24-year old, five-foot-seven Malalad is also beauty queen material, a 2003 Bb. Pilipinas candidate who was adjudged the most talented and most fit over more than 30 candidates.

Shades of trackster Lydia de Vega and swimmers Christine Jacob and Akiko Thomson who took the nation’s fancy some years back. But Malalad would be the first to downplay her good looks.

“I would never trade my sports uniform over some glamorous, sequined gowns,” says Malalad, an AB Communication Arts graduate of the University of Santo Tomas.

 Laban ng Pinoy! Sipang Karateka!

Busted lips, broken ribs, bloodied face over the ramp and klieg lights?

“A karatedo gold medal is always better than any beauty title,” she maintains.

Indeed, the way to a karatedo gold medal is never easy but it is Malalad’s world, a sport that she has always been fascinated with even as a young girl in Cainta, Rizal, where she grew up.

“MAG-DYOWA na ba talaga kayo ni Nene Tamayo?” ‘yan ang text question namin kay Rico Robles ng Pinoy Big Brother.

Text back ni Rico: “Let’s just say I’ll cross the bridge when I get there. But for now, mabait siya sa akin, maprinsipyo at maganda rin ang pananaw niya sa buhay.

“Tagal na nga rin akong hindi nakalalabas, eh. Yesterday, I was with Gretchen (Malalad). Just busy currently sa studio, working on my demo para sa album!”

Gretchen Malalad, fourth evictee from Kuya’s house

Gretchen Malalad, fourth evictee from Kuya’s house

Last week (Wednesday,) Gretchen Malalad was voted out of Pinoy Big Brother’s house after garnering 13.4% of the total number of text votes. It is recalled that Gretchen volunteered to take the place of best pal Aleck Bovick for eviction last week on what would have been a switch in roles between bests friends.

But the challenge didn’t push through, and Aleck became the third evictee. Gretchen however had to pay the price for this move. (And now that she’s out, she also has to face the intrigues that resulted in what was perceived to be an unusual closeness between her and Aleck Bovick inside Kuya’s house. Aleck has in the past been linked to another woman, DJ Alvaro but she has denied it saying DJ was just the producer of her album.)

“I don’t regret anything,” Gretchen who’s also known as Gege, said of her eviction. “I am also happy that I made the sacrifice of posing as a ballerina for close to 24 hours. It was for a good cause.” After this, Gretchen received five TV sets which she said she’d give to the Philippine Air Force soldiers for their use in their barracks.

Gretchen holds the rank as Airwoman lst Class. She went AWOL when she joined Pinoy Big Brother Celebrity Edition and so she’ll be discharged from the PAF. “But it’s an honorable discharge and I can still go back to the service,” she said. “I can’t talk about the details though. What I can say is that the PAF doesn’t stop anybody from exploring other opportunities.”

Gretchen also lost her monthly stipend from the Philippine Sports Commission when she, a three-time Southeast Asian gold medalist for karatedo, became a housemate.

GRETCHEN’S PAF CASE ONGOING

Posted in PBB Forums byMasoral @ Mar 22 2006, 08:15 AM

FREEHAND
By Mario E. Bautista
People’s Journal

WHAT can Gretchen say about the love-hate relationship between Roxie and Rico?

I wish they’d still patch things up, kasi bagay naman sila, ‘di ba?”

And most writers present agree with her.

“Magkakatuluyan ang dalawang ‘yan eventually,” they opine.

But Roxie cringes at the idea, even if she agreed to pose with Rico for a photo session with the press.

Gretchen is very good-natured and she just laughed when asked about her rumored lesbian affair with Aleck Bovick.

“You know what, I just went malling and had dinner with her last night,” she says. “But we were with her boyfriend, Carlo Maceda, who turned out to be so mabait. When I found out may rumor na lesbian kami ni Aleck, pinagtawanan ko lang. I’m secure with my femininity. I’ve had two serious boyfriends before na parehong four years tumagal.”

Gretchen joined Bb. Pilipinas in 2003 and won as Ms. Talent and Ms. Red Bull. How did she get into PBB?

“ABS called me up. I had then just won a gold medal in the SEA Games. Sabi ko, ‘di ba sa artista lang ‘yan? And they said they want athletes, too. So, ‘ayun, nakuha ako. But I’m not familiar with PBB at all — kasi, during the first batch, I was in Naples, Italy, for five months training in karate to prepare for the SEA Games. Kaya hindi ako masyadong familiar about the show.”

What’s her status with the Philippine Air Force?

“My case is ongoing, so I’m not allowed to talk about it. Nagpaalam naman ako verbally, but they said I didn’t give them enough time’s notice. I’ve already reported back to work at nang kumain na uli ako sa karinderia namin, everybody now knows me. But honestly, I want to try showbiz muna, so I’m hoping they’ll just give me an honorable discharge.”

She actually did a good gesture for the Air Force when she sacrificed not going to sleep for 24 hours while dancing the ballet.

“I got five TV sets from that and I gave them all to the barracks of the soldiers in Villamor Air Base.”

When she became a housemate, she also lost her monthly stipend from the Philippine Sports Commission as a three-time karate gold medalist in the SEA Games.

“But I don’t regret joining PBB at all. I learned so much from the experience and now that a new career is before me, baka this is a new way for me to be able to help my family. Kasi, konti lang naman ang kita ko before.”
