‘PDA’ tolerates Von’s terroristic acts

‘PDA’ tolerates Von’s terroristic acts

WHY HIM?

Von Arroyo’s landing a slot as one of the teachers on Pinoy Dream Academy has elicited unsavory remarks from some sectors in show business. They felt the singer, who made a name in the 90s as the voice behind the hit song, Mr. Lonely and a few others, didn’t quite fit the part. After all, he was a mere jukebox singer, one who has tucked under his belt four solo albums under Viva Records and Prime Music.

That’s as far as most people know. What they don’t realize is that Von is more than equipped to teach. He has a degree in Mass Communications, cum laude, from the Perpetual Help College in Manila. In high school, spent at St. Joseph Academy in Bongabon, Oriental Mindoro, he finished first honorable mention.

Teaching is one of Von’s many interests, which also include, aside from singing, organizing events and working full-time as Business Development Manager of Jewels Apparel. Over and above these multifarious commitments, Von teaches Voice Communication, Hosting and Singing at John Robert Powers International.

Von says he was disturbed when some people questioned his credibility when they first saw him on PDA as the Terror Teacher to a bunch of young singer-hopefuls. “That’s the sad part about having been known for a certain image. People tend to think you are nothing but,” he said. Von says he is determined to prove them wrong. He’s glad he has the support of the PDA producers, notably director Lauren Dyogi, who offered him the part.

On PDA, Von is known for his terroristic acts that often lead to embarrassing moments to the students. He may be strict, he admits, but it can’t be said he isn’t fair. “The bottomline is, we want to instill discipline among the students,” he said. Von is in the company of other terror teachers on PDA like Gretchen Malalad and Malu de Guzman.

Von started his career as an original member of 14K, a singing group made up of pre-teens under the supervision of music virtuoso Ryan Cayabyab. He has written commercial jingles for Milo and Lucky Me and has posed as model for Toyota, Coke, RCBC, and PLDT.

‘PDA’ teachers masusungit

‘PDA’ teachers masusungit
Tiyempo
Chit Ramos

Parang it’s all for show lang ang ginagawa nina Gretchen at Malu.

An excerpt from PINOY DREAMS article on page 55:

PDA, parang prep school

Posted by Eric_Arthur_Blair in PDA Teachers Forums in PDA Website on September 15, 2006 @  04:13 PM

Nagdagdag ng main characters ang reality show ng ABS-CBN na Pinoy Dream Academy on its second week with three more instructors.

Mga original teachers sina Moy Ortiz for voice, Maribeth Bichara for dance and Gretchen Malalad for fitness.

Von Arroyo (who’s home from Japan stints) is diction teacher. Si Sweet Plantado naman for expression at Malou de Guzman for performance.

Sa mga nag-aakala na ang Academy ng ABS-CBN is a “master’s course” for these scholars, look closely now.

Anyway, masaya. Prep school style for pre-schoolers.

May stand at the back, behind the class si Titser Von.

Masasabi natin that they learn as they teach.

Ibang show ito talaga!

Vol. 8 No.4, p.42-43

An excerpt from Theodore P. Jurado’s Article, entitled “ALMA Matters”

“FOR ME, KARATE IS A LIFETIME CAREER
AND EVEN IF I’D BE WORKING,
NANDIYAN PA RIN ANG KARATE. IT’S A WAY OF LIFE.”
                                                                        - Alma Cabasal
                                                                            1st Dan - Shodan

Theodore:    Who among our current karate athletes do you admire most?

Alma       :    Sina Ma’am Cherli and Ma’am Gege [Gretchen Malalad].
I call them ”Ma’am” as a sign of respect.  Kasi, bukod sa magaling sila, they
represented the Philippines in a lot of international competitions and
brought honors to the country.  Sila ‘yung una kong Sensei [teachers].
They are very strict sa training, but they are mababait naman.  Marami
akong natutunan sa kanilang dalawa.

Theodore:    So you watched Gretchen  during her stay in the Pinoy Big Brother house early this year?

Alma       :    Kasama ba ‘yan? (Smiles) Oo naman, napanood ko siya.  Sayang, hindi siya nanalo.  Pero it’s okey, she’s popular naman now, e!

Theodore:
Do you see Gretchen competing in the SEA Games next year even if she’s now in showbiz?

Alma       :    I guess she will compete, kaya naman niya.  I wish her all the luck for her four-peat.  Kahit busy si Ma’am Gege sa other stuff, she’s training hard.
Hindi naman siya nagpapabaya, e.

Theodore:    How about the Doha Asian Games this December, do you think she can win the gold?

Alma       :    Hopefully, manalo siya.  But I can’t tell about her chances, mabigat ang competition, e.

Feedback on 7 Sexiest Pinay Athletes

An excerpt from People’s INsider Magazine September 20, 2006 p.45:

Sheggz Nepomuceno, an avid fan of karateka turned showbiz personality Gretchen Malalad, was also thankful for having that list of the hottest hotties in sports.

“I’m so glad that INSIDER has a list of the top 7 sexiest Filipina sports personalities.  Hindi lang dapat ang mga artista ang ginagawan ng list, female athletes should have one too,” said Sheggz, who is the president of Gege’s Sidekicks.

Gretchen has come a long way, indeed, from ABS-CBN 2’s Pinoy Big Brother Celebrity Edition — especially now that she has a fan club. Sweet!

Guro, dapat maging inspirasyon

September 2, 2006

The PDA is a school, all right, attended by “scholars”.

Sa isang school, there must be communication. The teachers must understand all their students, too.

Teaching is not just sharing knowledge. Dapat ma-inspire ang mga estudyante to learn more, to do a lot.

Dahil teaching is not just learning but inspiring, too.

Nakuha siya as a scholar in spite of language.

For the benefit of all.

Di ba, dapat, may ginawa at gagawin sila? An interpreter can also help out the teachers in understanding and inspiring him.

O satisfied na kaya sina Moy Ortiz, Maribeth Bichara at Gretchen Malalad na hindi sila naunawaan ni Jun dahil mae-expel ito in due time?

Satisfied na kaya sila with the thought na wala silang nagawa sa kanya, maliban lang sa pagbibigay sa kanya ng pagkakataon to sleep in their class?

7 Sexiest Pinay Athletes

By Theodore P. Jurado

Check out the latest issue of People’s INsider Magazine with Vina Morales, Yasmien Kurdi and Mark Herras at the cover. Our very own Gretchen Malalad is topping the list of the said category.

Just an excerpt from that article:

GRETCHEN MALALAD
Karate

Topping the list is this 26-year old chick who has been going places this year after winning her third SEA Games gold in the combat sport of karate….

…. Many predicted she will be the next Nene Tamayo (the PBB Season 1 winner) but in the end, it was Keanna Reeves who got the title..

…. She’s still very much into sports and will, in fact, compete in the Doha Asian Games where she will attempt to snatch gold in the women’s 60kg. individual kumite event.

…. If things fall into place, Gege might train along with the members of the national karate team in Italy next month before heading to the Doha Asian Games.  Before doing that, however, she will first serve as physical fitness teacher in ABS-CBN’s new reality show Pinoy Dream Academy.  She will also host a new mixed martial arts show which features UFC champion Brandon Vera on Studio 23 next month.

Thanks Theodore for mentioning the http://www.gretchenmalalad.i.ph fansite!

A heads up Sidekicks for Ms. Gege!
