“Gretchen is a fighter. I know she will do good, I saw her in practice.
“Everyone has a chance na makakuha ng medal.

“Gretchen is a fighter. I know she will do good, I saw her in practice mas matindi na ang mga sipa niya ngayon and sa tingin ko, she will make an impact sa Asian Games,” pahayag ni Ponce na siya ring tumatayong team manager kay Malalad na lumalabas sa isang reality talent show saan ay isa itong physical fitness instructor.

KARATE’S poster girl is far from worried.
Despite a recent knee injury, Gretchen Malalad aims to surpass her previous finish when she leaves for the Asian Games in Doha, Qatar today.
“Once you dream of something, if you really want to achieve it, you’ll work very hard for it,” Malalad said in Filipino.
Malalad, a bronze medalist in the 2002 edition in Busan, will compete in the -60kg individual kumite during the karate competition on Dec. 12-13.
National karate president Ed Ponce remains confident of the chances of his top ward.
“Gretchen is a fighter,” he said. “I know she will do good. I saw her in practice, her kicks are better. I think she will make an impact in this Asian Games.”
The 26-year-old Malalad, a three-time Southeast Asian Games gold medalist, sustained a knee injury last month.
Malalad’s teammates will be planing off from Naples, Italy, where the national karate team had been training since September.
SEA Games gold medal winner Marna Pabillore and Mae Soriano are also among the favored bets.
“Everyone has a chance to win a medal,” said Ponce. “(Italian coach) Giuseppe Romano gave us a good training. We hope that all our hard work and sacrifice will bear fruit.”
Malalad bagged a gold in the recent Korean Open championships, her lone international stint this year.
“Those who participated in the competition most likely will be the same ones who will compete in the Asian Games,” said Malalad, who has also been busy appearing as a fitness trainer in a reality talent show on local television.
Nelson Pacalso, Junel Perenia, Bong Toribio and kata specialist Noel Espinosa will also see action for the national karate team, the last batch of Filipino athletes flying to Doha.

Is Gretchen Malalad seriously training for Asian Games?

By Theodore P. Jurado
It’s two weeks to go before the biggest Asian sports spectacle reels off in Doha, Qatar.
Now the $64 question: Is Team Philippines ready to slug it off in the Asian Games and surpass its haul of three gold medals in teh 2002 edition in Busan, South Korea?
We still have some nagging questions about our participatin in Asiad, especially about our team’s readiness to battle its Asian counterparts, several of which have world-class caliber.
The Asian Games is far differently story from the Southeast Asian Games, where the Philippines won its very first overall championship in 2005 with 112 golds.
A number of sports observers say that in this year’s competitions, which will be held in the Middle East for the first time in over three decades, the Philippines will be very lucky to win five gold medals, just enough to surpass its haul four years ago.
Here’s some of our queries:
Is Gretchen Malalad seriously training for Asian Games?
After Gretchen won her third straight gold medal in the 2005 SEA Games, many say that she’s primed to give the Philippines its first-ever karate gold in the Asiad. In fact, national karate president Ed Ponce told us that Gretchen has more powerful kicks than before.
But when Gretchen’s showbiz career went into full throttle this year, thanks to her participation in Pinoy Big Brother Celebrity Edition and being a part of the Pinoy Dream Academy reality show, a lot of people are asking if she’s ready for the task of giving her best to make the country proud. Gretchen was a bronze medalist in the 2002 Busan Games.
What gave people doubts was the fact that when Gretchen’s teammates in the national karate team led by fellow SEA Games gold medalist Marna Pabillore and Nelson Pacalso went to Naples, Italy, for a two-month training under foreign coach Gluseppe Romano, she didn’t join them because of her commitments, especially in PDA. Gretchen was a no-show in the World Karate Championships last month in Tampere, Finland, due to visa problems.
We tried to get Gretchen’s side about this via text, but to no avail.
Fortunately, I managed to get in touch with Ed Ponce. He assures everyone that Gretchen is focused on her Asian Games training despite her busy showbiz commitments. The karatekas, by the way, are leaving on Dec. 8, the last batch of Doha-bound athletes to depart.
So let’s give Gretchen the benefit of the doubt. If she brings home a medal of any color, it’d be a great achievement for her, to think that she has to juggle her time between showbiz and sports. On the other hand, if Gretchen comes home emptyhanded don’t blame her. At least she tried her best and was true to her word that she’d compete in the Asian Games. ‘Nuff said.
Malalad hopes to make Asiad dream a reality
November 10, 2006| By KRISTEL SATUMBAGA
FOR GRETCHEN Malalad, the coming Asian Games will probably be her make-or-break tournament to highlight a glorious career. Four years ago in Busan, Malalad came close to winning her first-ever karate Asian Games gold medal, but her effort fell short and she settled for the bronze medal. In the coming Doha Asian Games, Malalad is tipped as one of the players to beat in the +60 kgs, owing to her vast international experience and countless medals won in various tournaments – the SEA Games included. Despite her lofty status, the 26-year-old Malalad is looking at possibly her last big chance to put an exclamation point to a career that has netted her no less than three SEA Games gold medals. But she’s not exactly oozing with confidence. “I’m not going to promise anything, I’ll just do my best,” she said. Although she missed out training abroad, Malalad did her thing at home, doing it religiously under veteran David Lay despite her busy schedule as one of the mainstays in the popular “Pinoy Dream Academy” reality TV show on ABS-CBN where she plays a fitness instructress. It’s a daily grind but she said it did not hamper her training as her role calls only for a one-hour appearance. “Hindi ako nagpapabaya sa training,” said Malalad, a striking beauty who stood out but did not win in the Miss Philippines beauty contest in 2004. Dirediretso pa rin ang training ko dito,” said Malalad, who trains from 5 a.m. to 7 a.m. at the Philsports Complex in Pasig City before going to work in the TV show and again in the afternoon. Her fitness for the coming Asian Game will be tested when she competes in the Korean Grand Open Championship in Busan this weekend. The three-time Southeast Asian Games gold medallist is confident she will do well. “I wanted to feel again the ambiance of a tournament and the pressure that lies when competing dahil matagal-tagal na rin akong hindi nakakapag-compete abroad,” said Malalad. “Iba siyempre ‘yung atmosphere sa training at sa competition. I’ve been training really hard and I wanted to compete in a tournament before the Asian Games.” When asked if this would be her last Asian Games, Malalad just shrugged her shoulders. “I don’t know, pag-iisipan ko pa dahil the next Asian Games, 30 na ako.” Other members of the national karate team are Bernardino Chu, Irineo Torribio, Nelson Pacalso, Junel Perania, Mae Soriano, Noel Espinosa and Ma. Marna Pabillore – all are training abroad. |

RP karatekas off to Italy
October 1, 2006RP karatekas off to Italy THE eight-man national karate team leaves this weekend to Italy as it embarks on a rigid two-month training for the Asian Games in Doha, Qatar this December.
Manila Southeast Asian Games gold medalists Gretchen Malalad, Marna Pabillore and Nelson Pacalso spearhead the karatekas’ campaign in the quadrennial meet and will be joined by Bern Chu, Bong Toribio, Mae Soriano, Junel Perenia and Noel Espinosa.
Except for Espinosa, the country’s lone campaigner in the kata (forms) event, the rest are seeing action in the kumite (combat) event.
The team is trying to surpass the two bronze medals the country won in the 2002 Busan Asiad.
“We haven’t won a gold in karate in the Asian Games and I hope we could make it this time. Our karatekas are working hard in their training since February and we hope na magbunga ang lahat ng paghihirap nila,” said Philippine Karatedo Federation (PKF) head Ed Ponce in the weekly SCOOP sa Kamayan.
As part of their preparations, the Filipino karatekas are competing in two European tournaments in the coming months.
Following their training in Naples, Italy, the nationals immediately plunge into action at the World Karate Federation (WKF) World Championships on Oct. 13-15 in Finland.
After the meet, the team returns to Italy and resume its training.
Then in November, the karatekas compete in the Italian Open, their last major tournament prior to heading for Doha.
Malalad and Perenia are in their second Asiad while the rest are newcomers, raring to prove their worth against world class competitions from Japan, Korea, Vietnam and countries from the former Soviet republic.
In the Busan Asiad four years ago, Malalad and Cherli Tugday snatched a bronze medal each to duplicate the same feat by the country in the Hiroshima edition of the meet in 1994.

‘PDA’ tolerates Von’s terroristic acts
WHY HIM?
Von Arroyo’s landing a slot as one of the teachers on Pinoy Dream Academy has elicited unsavory remarks from some sectors in show business. They felt the singer, who made a name in the 90s as the voice behind the hit song, Mr. Lonely and a few others, didn’t quite fit the part. After all, he was a mere jukebox singer, one who has tucked under his belt four solo albums under Viva Records and Prime Music.
That’s as far as most people know. What they don’t realize is that Von is more than equipped to teach. He has a degree in Mass Communications, cum laude, from the Perpetual Help College in Manila. In high school, spent at St. Joseph Academy in Bongabon, Oriental Mindoro, he finished first honorable mention.
Teaching is one of Von’s many interests, which also include, aside from singing, organizing events and working full-time as Business Development Manager of Jewels Apparel. Over and above these multifarious commitments, Von teaches Voice Communication, Hosting and Singing at John Robert Powers International.
Von says he was disturbed when some people questioned his credibility when they first saw him on PDA as the Terror Teacher to a bunch of young singer-hopefuls. “That’s the sad part about having been known for a certain image. People tend to think you are nothing but,” he said. Von says he is determined to prove them wrong. He’s glad he has the support of the PDA producers, notably director Lauren Dyogi, who offered him the part.
On PDA, Von is known for his terroristic acts that often lead to embarrassing moments to the students. He may be strict, he admits, but it can’t be said he isn’t fair. “The bottomline is, we want to instill discipline among the students,” he said. Von is in the company of other terror teachers on PDA like Gretchen Malalad and Malu de Guzman.
Von started his career as an original member of 14K, a singing group made up of pre-teens under the supervision of music virtuoso Ryan Cayabyab. He has written commercial jingles for Milo and Lucky Me and has posed as model for Toyota, Coke, RCBC, and PLDT.

Parang it’s all for show lang ang ginagawa nina Gretchen at Malu.

PDA, parang prep school
Posted by Eric_Arthur_Blair in PDA Teachers Forums in PDA Website on September 15, 2006 @ 04:13 PM
Nagdagdag ng main characters ang reality show ng ABS-CBN na Pinoy Dream Academy on its second week with three more instructors.
Mga original teachers sina Moy Ortiz for voice, Maribeth Bichara for dance and Gretchen Malalad for fitness.
Von Arroyo (who’s home from Japan stints) is diction teacher. Si Sweet Plantado naman for expression at Malou de Guzman for performance.
Sa mga nag-aakala na ang Academy ng ABS-CBN is a “master’s course” for these scholars, look closely now.
Anyway, masaya. Prep school style for pre-schoolers.
May stand at the back, behind the class si Titser Von.
Masasabi natin that they learn as they teach.
Ibang show ito talaga!

Alma : Sina Ma’am Cherli and Ma’am Gege [Gretchen Malalad].
I call them ”Ma’am” as a sign of respect. Kasi, bukod sa magaling sila, they
represented the Philippines in a lot of international competitions and

They are very strict sa training, but they are mababait naman. Marami

Theodore: Do you see Gretchen competing in the SEA Games next year even if she’s now in showbiz?

Sheggz Nepomuceno, an avid fan of karateka turned showbiz personality Gretchen Malalad, was also thankful for having that list of the hottest hotties in sports.
“I’m so glad that INSIDER has a list of the top 7 sexiest Filipina sports personalities. Hindi lang dapat ang mga artista ang ginagawan ng list, female athletes should have one too,” said Sheggz, who is the president of Gege’s Sidekicks.
Gretchen has come a long way, indeed, from ABS-CBN 2’s Pinoy Big Brother Celebrity Edition — especially now that she has a fan club. Sweet!

The PDA is a school, all right, attended by “scholars”.
Sa isang school, there must be communication. The teachers must understand all their students, too.
Teaching is not just sharing knowledge. Dapat ma-inspire ang mga estudyante to learn more, to do a lot.
Dahil teaching is not just learning but inspiring, too.
Nakuha siya as a scholar in spite of language.
For the benefit of all.
Di ba, dapat, may ginawa at gagawin sila? An interpreter can also help out the teachers in understanding and inspiring him.
O satisfied na kaya sina Moy Ortiz, Maribeth Bichara at Gretchen Malalad na hindi sila naunawaan ni Jun dahil mae-expel ito in due time?
Satisfied na kaya sila with the thought na wala silang nagawa sa kanya, maliban lang sa pagbibigay sa kanya ng pagkakataon to sleep in their class?

Just an excerpt from that article:
GRETCHEN MALALAD
Karate
Topping the list is this 26-year old chick who has been going places this year after winning her third SEA Games gold in the combat sport of karate….
…. Many predicted she will be the next Nene Tamayo (the PBB Season 1 winner) but in the end, it was Keanna Reeves who got the title..
…. She’s still very much into sports and will, in fact, compete in the Doha Asian Games where she will attempt to snatch gold in the women’s 60kg. individual kumite event.
…. If things fall into place, Gege might train along with the members of the national karate team in Italy next month before heading to the Doha Asian Games. Before doing that, however, she will first serve as physical fitness teacher in ABS-CBN’s new reality show Pinoy Dream Academy. She will also host a new mixed martial arts show which features UFC champion Brandon Vera on Studio 23 next month.

Meet the ‘Pinoy Dream Academy’ teachers
| By WALDEN SADIRI |
The Manila Bulletin Online
| Starting on Aug. 28 and airing nightly henceforth on ABS-CBN’s Primetime Bida, the “Pinoy Dream Academy” students will come face to face with three well-respected teachers. For singing, they have Moy Ortiz of the acclaimed vocal group The CompanY; for dance and artistic movements on stage, they have no less than topnotch dance choreographer and judge of the recently concluded “You Can Dance” Maribeth Bichara; and for their morning fitness classes, they have ex-Pinoy Big Brother Celebrity housemate and SEA Games Gold Medalist for Karate, Gretchen Malalad.
Now meet the “Pinoy Dream Academy Teachers,” their insights, why they took the job and what are they looking for. Gretchen Malalad: Fitness expert The scholars’ fitness class during their stay at the Pinoy Dream Academy will be on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 8 .m. to 9 a.m. every week. And their teacher is no other than karate expert Gretchen Malalad. I’m not just there to teach them how to look good but to help them with their voice. They need a strong cardiovascular system for them to sing well. And in dancing, the core body is important so core training is important and I’ll work on that,” she explained. She stressed though that it is not the academy’s aim to make the students lose weight. Rather, for them to have more stamina and energy to get them through the day and most especially get them through their concerts. She believes that having a healthy body will make it easier for them to attend their classes and meet the taxing requirements as scholars. She also pointed out that she’ll be advising them on proper nutrition and the right food to eat and it will depend on them whether they follow her or not. Since I’m an athlete and have been training abroad, I’m bringing to PDA the technology I learned. I applied it to my curriculum,” she remarked. When she was still in the military (she was an Airwoman 1st Class before she got discharged), she was the Taebo instructor of the soldiers every morning. At the moment she has opened her own karate school, the Karate Development of Arts and Sports at Greenwood Village in Pasig. She’s still a member of the Karate Philippine Team. For the 26-year-old fitness expert, an important ingredient in becoming a total performer would be conditioning and this is what she hopes the scholars would accomplish with her at PDA’s fitness helm! |

“The curriculum I prepared is suited to the needs of the PDA students. More on cardio exercises for them,” says Gretchen.

Friday, August 25, 2006 The premise of the Pinoy Dream Academy is to establish a school where 16 scholars, as opposed to “housemates,” will train under a team of respected and credible instructors. Here in the Philippines, ABS-CBN and Endemol found the experts in Jim Paredes; voice coach and composer Moy Ortiz of The CompanY; seasoned choreographer Maribeth Bichara; and Asean gold medalist and former Pinoy Big Brother finalist Gretchen Malalad for fitness.
